Winter 2009
It was a busy Fall and Winter for us. Our traveling “Recycleman” sculpture came home from his stay at the Atlanta Botanical Garden as a “Scarecrow in the Garden” to his final destination of the year. Members of “Keep Morgan Beautiful” accompanied him to the Bostwick Cotton Gin Festival, handing out recycling information and candy that had anti-littering messages. “Recycleman” has been Keep Morgan Beautiful’s ambassador at local festivals and events to help promote environmental stewardship.
The opening reception for Dan Thoman's show"Wood and Stone" was held Friday, November 6th at the Monroe Art Guild located at 205 South Broad Street in Monroe, Georgia. The show ran from November 4 through December 29, 2009. Exhibited were turnings, carvings and sculpture in cherry, walnut, elm, oak, cedar, and bass wood (or whatever local wood offered him). His favorite stone for turning and sculpture is alabaster, but he also enjoys sculpting honeycomb calcite, Colorado yule marble and limestone.
In November, Dan Thoman gave a STMA sponsored presentation to the Boys and Girls Club of Madison and Morgan County on his pursuits in photography. In addition to talking about emerging and traditional photography careers, he showed the kids how computer technology can be used with cameras. The kids really enjoyed hamming it up for the “Kid Cam”. They asked lots of really good questions that indicated an interest in this artistic field.
Later that month, Dan was invited as a mentor to camp with the “Passport to Manhood” Club group at Hard Labor Creek State Campground in Rutledge. In addition to campfire chef duties, Dan honed his “spooky storytelling” skills after dinner.
Dan & Linda Thoman co-taught a STMA FamilyWorkshop entitled “Turn, Turn, Turn” on November 14, 2009. This program offered folks (over 10 years of age) a chance to try out wood turning on lathes that Dan set up at entrance of the Museum. It was a beautiful Fall morning for letting the wood chips fly! For those that were not turning wood, an ornament painting workshop was going on inside.
Linda Thoman, sponsored by STMA, presented holiday themed art activities at the Boys and Girls Club of Madison and Morgan County during the month of December. We painted wooden ornament forms turned for us by Dan Thoman, which were used as gifts for Boys and Girls Club volunteers and staff. We also created paper ornaments out of balloons, holiday tissue paper and glue. When dry, the balloons inside were popped to reveal a light catching, hand made work of art for the holiday.
In December, Dan and Linda supported local tourism by volunteering to work as tour guide and house docents for the Madison Georgia, Holiday Tour of Homes. This annual tour brings folks from all over to visit Madison and Morgan County. They can’t help but notice our vibrant arts community!
